Wonderful original Victorian St George pattern chess set. A very large and complete set (one knight with replacement head), finely turned ebony and boxwood pieces. As acquired with large hinged box board: gilt stamped leather chess board exterior and inner backgammon lining. Spine marked \"ENGLISH GAMES\", VOL., 1 VOL. 2.

Kings measure approx. 4\" (10cm) tall x 1 3/8\" (3.5cm) base diameter. Pawns measure approx. 1.75\" (4.5cm) tall.

No maker\'s or other marks.

Generally very good condition. Minor chips to one white and 5x black pawns. Single chip to black king. One black knight has a smaller replacement head - see photograph. Board with general wear to extremities but good and solid despite.

Boxed weight approx. 1.3kg.
