There\'s just something so unique, and special about this antique Victorian cameo...this heavy gold frame was obviously hand-made to fit the cameo, not the other way around--you can see how it is not perfectly oval, on purpose. And the subject matter is not your typical \"lady with a diamond necklace\" either--this one is a beautiful depiction of the Greek goddess Artemis, or if you prefer, the Roman goddess, Diana.

When you consider price, please note the thick, heavy 14k gold frame, and the weight of this piece--almost ONE OUNCE--a lot of that weight being in the gold frame.

Artemis/Diana was known as the goddess of the hunt, and of wild animals. Yet, she was also associated with the feminine side of women--such as fertility and childbirth. (kind of like today\'s modern woman who does it all!). She is often depicted by the symbolism of the new moon (on this cameo, the crescent moon appears on her head) and the bow and arrow (which is visible behind her right shoulder).

The carving is very nicely done on a pale ivory shell, and the darker natural hues in the shell appear in just the right places, throughout the hair and on her chest. Check out the bowstring--the carver even added some \"ridges\" to it to make it look realistic. This is a very nice quality carving with lots of attention to detail.

The cameo is estimated to be from the mid to late 1800s. The pin closure is a C-clasp, with an unusual safety clasp which closes immediately when the pin enters into the closure (I have never seen one of these). The frame is solid 14k gold, tested and guaranteed. It\'s thick and heavy.

The cameo measures 2\" by 1 3/4\". The gold frame is 3/8\" wide at the widest point. It weighs a massive 30.9 grams. The cameo itself has some hairline crazing visible from the back but it appears to be just on the underside surface--nothing shows through at all from the front, and it does not affect wear. This cameo is in very good antique condition.
