Mihail Chemiakin is an extremely controversial art figure. Both his socially provocative art which is meant to disturb and his personal life which has been riddled with underground activity and altercations with authority have been the subject of public scrutiny. Like many artists, the controversy surrounding his personality and his creations has only added to his celebrity status and created increased demand for his art.Born to a military family in 1943, Chemiakin’s family soon moved to East Germany where his father was an army officer. They returned to the Soviet Union in 1957 and Chemiakin began studying art. In his youth, Chemiakin has unusual and strong points of view that were disapproved of by Soviet Society. In 1961, he was forced to undergo a series of psychiatric treatments in an attempt to make his viewpoints more mainstream. In 1967 he created the “St. Petersburg Group” of artists that shared his counter cultural beliefs. At the same time, he worked with famous Soviet philosopher Vladimir Ivanov to write a treaty called “Metaphysical Synthesism” which explained his artistic viewpoints. In response, Mihail Chemiakin was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1971 because his divergent beliefs were deemed a threat to the nation.Chemiakin moved to France where he published “Apollon-77,” an almanac of post-Stalinist works. In 1981, he moved to New York City. He continued to work on creating art in the vast array of mediums in which he is proficient including painting, print making, sculpture, stage designer, photography, poetry, and book publishing. Regardless of medium, Chemiakin’s signature is social commentary that disturbs. His work often depicts distorted and grotesque images. They are intended to shock the audience, challenge pre-conceived notions, and encourage the view to think more deeply about the world they are a part of. Much of his work looks like a dangerous, colorful carnival. In 2011, he was commissioned by the city of Moscow to create a monument named “Children are the Victims of Adult Vices.” The series of sculptures depicts adult issues including drug addiction and prostitution nearby to two young children playing and seemingly unaware of the vices around them. Due to its graphic nature and controversial subject matter the monument, like much of Chemiakin’s art, remains controversial. Many are concerned about the nature of a statue designed for children that is also extremely frightening. The personal life of Mihail Chemiakin has been equally controversial. Contemporary poet Andrey Voznesensky has described Chemiakin as the “Black prince of the Russian underground.” His underground lifestyle, exile, and numerous incidents with authority have all aided in creating this reputation. More recently, Russians have become suspicious of his apparent wealth for a Russian artist and have called foul play. He also has alleged ties to numerous Russian Mafia figures, including Felix Komarov. A number of contemporary artists have also spread rumors that Chemiakin has plagiarized much of his work from other artists he has worked with previously, including Mihail Shvartsman and Eduard Zelenin. The controversy surrounding both Chemiakin’s art and his personality has helped elevate his career. The more press he receives, the more well known the artist becomes and the more interest there seems to be in his art. Despite his earlier exile, Chemiakin is now highly regarded by the Russian government and he serves as a source of nationalistic pride. Still living today, Chemiakin has a number of projects currently in the works and there is no doubt that his art will continue to provoke well into the future
