Artists are represented by separate folios, each of which feature an eye-catching color cover, a bibliography and full-color and black-and-white engraved plates. Includes work by Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947), Auguste Brouet (1872-1941), Paul Jouve (1878-1973), Jean-Emile Laboureur (1877-1943), André E. Marty (1882-1974), Louis Morin (1855-1938), Rene-Georges Hermann-Paul (1874 - 1940), and Marcel Vertès (1895-1961), among others; many of which are also represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art\'s permanent collection, primarily within the Department of Drawings and Prints. Each volume was originally published in an edition of 700 numbered copies: 50 on Japanese paper, 650 on white vellum. (30, [21] pages) illustrations, plates, portrait. 18 bois en noir ou en couleur hors texte plus 10 vignettes dans le texte. 18 color + black & white plates + 10 vignettes in-text. The book & DJ are in a near fine condition. The paper of the front hinge of the hardcover portfolio is split & visible from the outside.

CHARLES EMILE EGLI (pseud. CARLEGLE) (1877-1937) Swiss-born artist and illustrator who lived in Paris from 1900. He was particularly noted for his humorous drawings and caricatures, as well as hispenchant for nude studies. Egli adopted the pseudonym of Carlègle. He soon became known in satirical journals like Le Rire, Le Sourire, La Vie Parisienne, L\'Assiette au Beurre, Fantasio, La Gazette do Bon Ton, Les Humoristes and Qui lit rit. Egli excelled in wood engraving. His illustrations for Daphnis et Chloé exhibited in the autumn Salon of 1913 launched his career. From then until his death in 1937 he illustratedbooks by authors such as Virgil, Paul Valéry, Blaise Pascal, Paul Verlaine, Anatole France and Charles Maurras.[link removed by ]

Charles Martin ( Montpellier , 1884 - Paris , 1934 )was a French cartoonist. Charles Martin excelled in the techniques of etching, influenced by Cubism, his style is sleek and the delicate trait is characterized by a precise line, efficient and cheerful. Began his career around 1912, for large French elegant journals like \"La Gazette du Bon Ton\", Femina ...,or the American Harper\'s Bazaar, Vanity Fair. In a rapidly moving luxurious and decorative art he exercises his talent in the most varied fields: fashion, perfume bottles, furniture, wallpapers, posters .... Charles Martin has illustrated about twenty books.[link removed by ])

No.3: Joseph Hemard autobiographie par lui-meme, lettre-preface de Georges Grappe, portrait par Hemard. Pp. 42, [3] pages, [16] leaves of plates : illustrations (some color). Joseph Hémard, a popular French book illustrator, was a prolific artist. During the early years of the 20th century he published cartoons and comics in illustrated newspapers like Le Pêle-mêle or Le Bon Vivant. He also designed costumes and sets for several operas, patterns for printed textiles, bookbindings, posters and even a facade for a bar in the 1925 Paris Exposition of Decorative Art.[2] His lasting fame, however, lies in his book illustrations - always distinctly French in character and often erotic, which he produced for a great number of titles including many classics of French literature such as Le Malade Imaginaire (1920), Gargantua et Pantagruel (1922), Jacques Le Fataliste (1923), Cyrano de Bergerac (1927), and Aucassin et Nicolette.[link removed by ]

Jean-Emile Laboureur was a French painter, draftsman, engraver, etcher, lithographer and illustrator. Author of numerous engravings by individual boards or books, he illustrated almost eighty works, often by contemporary authors such as André Maurois, Jean Giraudoux, Colette, Andre Gide, Paul-Jean Toulet, Maurice Maeterlinck or François Mauriac. He painted landscapes, still lifes, & also made ​​some frescoes and sculptures. His works are preserved in several national museums.[link removed by ]

Hermann Paul (1864-1940) French artist and illustrator. Includes as a preface the facsimile of a handwritten letter penned by Francis de Miomante to Hermann Paul, as well as a portrait of Paul drawn by Valentine Hugo. Ends with a bibliography.

No. 6: Pierre Brissaud étude par Jean Dulac, portrait par Jacques Brissaud, lettre-preface de Robert Burnand. Pp. 41, [6] pages, [12] leaves of plates : illustrations (some color).
Pierre Brissaud (23 December 1885–1964) was a French Art Deco illustrator, painter, and engraver. Fashion oriented illustrator for French and American books and slicks. Magazine art for House and Garden, Ladies Home Journal, Fortune, Vogue, Gazette du Bon Ton. For the last, known for pochoir prints (each color individually stencilled). Also advertising for Cadillac, Steinway, Old Taylor Bourbon, Chase Lighting, Hupmobile, Crisco, and pin-ups in France. He was born in Paris and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and Atelier Fernand Cormon in Montmartre, Paris. His fellow Cormon students were his brother Jacques, André-Édouard Marty, Charles Martin, Georges Lepape. Students at the workshop drew, painted and designed wallpaper, furniture and posters. Earlier, Toulouse-Lautrec, van Gogh, and Henri Matisse had studied and worked there. His older brother Jacques Brissaud was a portrait and genre painter and his uncle Maurice Boutet de Monvel illustrated the fables of La Fontaine, songbooks for children and a life of Joan of Arc. A first cousin was the celebrated artist and celebrity portrait painter Bernard Boutet de Monvel. Brissaud is known for his pochoir (stencil) prints for the fashion magazine Gazette de la Mode et du Bon Ton published by Lucien Vogel, Paris. Many of his illustrations are realistic leisure scenes of the well-to-do. They illustrate the designs of Paris fashion houses such as Jeanne Lanvin, Chéruit, Worth, and Doucet. Brissaud\'s illustrations appeared in Vogue after it bought Bon Ton in 1925, as well as House & Garden and Fortune, and in books like Madame Bovary, Manon Lescaut, Mémoires de Saint-Simon, the autobiographical novels of Anatole France, Two gentlemen of Verona and many others. In 1907 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d\'Automne.

MATHURIN MEHEUT
Mathurin Méheut (1882-1958) was a French painter, ceramist, engraver, and etcher best known for his depictions of Breton scenes, the sea, and nature. In 1906 he exhibited with the Société des Artistes Français. From 1910-1912 Méheut collaborated with naturalists at the Roscoff marine biology station to depict marine life. This period culminated in a book (Etude de la mer, flore et faune de la Manche et de l’Océan) and 450 works exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in 1913. In 1914 he was awarded a travel scholarship by the Foundation Albert Kahn for visits to Hawaii and Japan in 1914, but his trip was cut short by World War I. In 1921 Méheut became the French Ministry of Defence\'s official painter and in 1925 began decorating commercial passenger ships, including the SS Normandie. Between world wars, he illustrated books for authors including Colette, Maurice Genevoix, and Pierre Loti, and created ceramics at Henriot in Quimper, at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, and at Villeroy & Boch in Sarre. During the 1940s he taught at the École des Beaux

Les Artistes Du Livre was a series of books devoted to important French Art Deco illustrators. The series is edited by Hanry Babou, 1, rue Verniquet, Paris, printed in Paris, 1928. Pages loose as issued in paper wrapper, some un-cut. A Complete collection of these twenty-four volumes published under the direction of Marcel Valotaire from 1928 to 1933, white vellum of a general run of seven hundred and fifty copies. This achievement was open to all major illustrators of the early twentieth century with artists like GEORGES BARBIER, Bonnard, Carlègle, Martin, Hémard, Laboureur, Hermann Paul, Brissaud, Méheut, Sauvage, Dignimont, Lobel-Riche, Marty, Belot, Brouet, Siméon, Berhold-Mahn, Vertès, Morin, Chimot, Legrand, Jouve, Touchet et Perrichon.... and these twenty-four form an exceptional talent meeting. Each monograph is drafted by a renowned author: Colette, Gérard D\'houville, Marcel Valotaire, Louis Barthou, Henry de Régnier, Pierre Mac Orlan, Claude Roger-Marx, Camille Mauclair, André Salmon, Paul Valéry...
