About 19th Century French Vermeil:

The French standard for 19th century vermeilwas18-24 carat gold layered over French sterling

silver. French vermeil is superior in quality and indurabilityto gold gilding and to gold plating and

to vermeil produced in other countries that typicallyhad no standard. Other countries permitted as little

as 10 carat gold, over sterling,to bedeemed vermeil.

The modernprocess of electrolysisDoes NOT result in the quality and durability of 19th century French vermeil.

The French discontinued the process of makingvermeilduring the early 1900\'s.

Antique French sterling tableware with vermeil was much more expensive to produce. Buyers paid

a substantial premium for vermeil. Today, French tableware with vermeilis highly prized

by advanced collectors. Quality items arebecomingscarce.
