Up for sale is an Eastern Hophornbeam (aka Ironwood) walking stick. Both Eastern Hophornbeam and American Hornbeam are called Ironwood, even though they are different species. Ironwood is known for its toughness and strength which makes it great for use in walking sticks. Some checking (cracking) on the ends may develop or already be evident. This is a natural part of the drying process and does not weaken the stick. Below are the specifics of this item.
  • Nice straight piece of Ironwood--an ideal length, diameter and weight for use as an everyday walking stick!
  • Super nice piece of very straight Ironwood with theflared root base still attached--we literally dug it out of the ground!
  • Nice big thick root base that typically contains curly figured grain. Could be polished into an awesome ball style top
  • Very strong wood
  • Fine-grained wood that is excellent wood for walking sticks. Our customers are always impressed by the workability of this wood--hard to beat!
  • Note: There may be some pulled or split-off wood fibers on the root base. Pictures were taken immediately after cutting so it is possible that some natural drying cracks have developed

Our wood products are always sustainably harvested from woodlands we own in Illinois. We take great pride in what we do and we care for our land. Removal of invasive species benefits the Environment from limiting their spread and opening up land for native species to grow. Native species are typically cut as part of thinning operations to improve the quality of our woodlots.
