The beauty of clocks is that they come in all sorts of different styles and designs. Just when you think you\'ve seen everything, you\'re reminded that there are a 1000 different ways to display the time....Here\'s another. Please make use of the enlarge feature on the photos below.
This is a superb \"castle clock\" from the heart of the Black forest region of Germany. As well as looking stunning in its own right, it has the added appeal of a cuckoo chime, with the little cuckoo stood within the small window to the turret.
The case is of oak? over the usual pine carcass. The colour is glorious, dark, almost \"church pew\" in hue. Columns, spires and castellations adorn the Gothic case, all finials being original to the piece (quite uncommon). it stands 14 inches from tip to toe, 8 inches wide and 5 inches deep.
The movement is wound from the rear via the rear door. From here are all the winders and setters. One winds up the time side, one winds up the chime (cuckoo), one sets the hands, and the last lets you set off the chime so the time and the chime can be brought into sync if needed. Sadly there are no maker\'s marks or stamps on the movement. The clock runs and cuckoos.
As I mentioned, the clock is unmessed with. The only damage is the top-most ball on the right hand finial has had a repair at some stage, other than that, just as the maker intended . The clock runs and cuckoos happily, even keeps fairly good time, but could do with a clean and service in the fullness of time. It calls out on the half hour and full hour.
The cuckoo is fully articulated, meaning when moved forward his wings and beak open, but is not connected to the movement, and does not look like it ever has been. It would be an simple matter of adding a wire from the cuckoo to one of the bellows arms to have him flapping in time to the chime, but as this is how I think it was originally made, I\'ll leave that choice to you.
You will not see many of this style of clock here on , as complete, original and working. A lovely mantle cuckoo clock worthy of any home or collection. Try and find another!
