GJPaw salesis pleased to bring to a RARE OFFERING of African Art & Cultural Artifacts from the estate of a well-known Chicago collector.
GJPaw salesis very pleased to offer A Standing White Hardstone
Figure of The Immortal ShouLao Holding a Deer & Peach.
Thestatuemost likely dates to thelast half of the
20thcentury, although it may be considerably older, and measures 8.5 inches tall (10.25 inches with stand) and weighs 3.5 lbs. The statue shows ShouLao, the deity of long
life, in his old age holding two important symbols of longevity - the peach and
the deer. Both known fortheir association with immortality, the
deer especially, was believed to live to a great age and known to be one of the
few animals capable of finding the "ling-chih" - the fungus of
immortality. The surface of the statue is well carved and polished.
A beautiful wispy cloud matrix can be seen in the stone. The statue is in
great condition, with the only issue I could find being a very small edge
missing to the back of the robe. It is most likely carved of Hanbai Yu stone, commonly known as "white jade." This is a great piece for both the
Chinese art collector and the Jade collector, as it is sure to bring beauty to
your collection and grow in value over time. It is, in short, a beautiful, sensitive carving.
