Founded in 1869, the International Watch Company of Schaffhausen, Switzerland has produced some of the finest (and I do mean finest) watches ever, on par with Vacheron & Constantin, Rolex or Patek Philippe in terms of the precision and caliber of its movements. Notable as the only watch making firm in German (North Eastern) Switzerland, it was founded by Florentine Ariosto Jones (1841-1916), an American citizen and Civil War veteran (13th Massachusetts Volunteers). Jones was indebted to both Henri Moser and Aaron Dennison (of Waltham fame) for getting his factory established and its watches are highly sought after today.

I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage ladies model form the firm, an 18kt Solid Rose Gold model in excellent PLUS condition that dates to circa 1960.  Before I say anything further I want to emphasize that the case (and dial) on this watch is PRISTINE in person. It was a bear to photograph so anything you see that isn’t perfect is reflections, shadows or glare!

Triple-signed for International Watch Company, its teardrop lug case measures 28mm lug tip to lug tip and 21mm in width (22mm with rose gold finished winding crown). This works out to be 1-1/8 inches in length by just over ¾ of an inch wide, including the crown. It is powered by its original IWC Caliber 41, 17 jewel mechanism, fully serviced by my certified watchmaker David just last week and keeping accurate time.

The silver, enamel finished dial is in great condition, the original that has been professionally restored (re-enameled) to its correct status in the recent past. It features raised gold hour markers, a 60 minute outer chapter and original gold metal Lance-style hands. Signed International Watch Co. Schaffhausen below the 12 and SWISS at the base of the dial.

The domed, hardened acrylic crystal is excellent condition with no flaws. The two-piece case is fully signed IWC and crafted of 18 Karat Solid Rose Gold. It is in excellent PLUS condition with absolutely no wear. Note those curled, teardrop style lugs – beautiful! The rose gold finished winding crown is a later addition in excellent order, operating smoothly.

Turning the watch over I note that the 18k solid gold back lid is snap-down in design and in FLAWLESS shape, free of any wear or engravings, past or present. Inside is a clean and high-grade mechanism that is signed INTERNATIONAL WATCH CO. – SWISS. This is a caliber 41 mechanism, as stamped below the balance. The serial number is also below the balance wheel and it is #1,5761,183, dating the watch to circa 1960 as per IWC production records.

The inside of the case lid is stamped with the Swiss 18k gold Goddess Minerva hallmark and also PROBUS IWC SCAFUSIA – INTERNATIONAL WATCH CO., SWISS - 18K, 0.750 -1641073 (IWC case reference numbers are unique to themselves).

This fine timepiece has been fully disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted with a new old stock Kreisler 10mm black crocodile grain leather strap that is attached to the watch. I am also including an additional Havana brown Kreisler NOS strap for the winner, I think this color works GREAT with rose gold cases and you might want to switch it from time to time.

Folks, if you wish to have the best quality money can buy I suggest that you seriously consider this beautifully preserved IWC – buying a watch like this today would easily set you back about five to six thousand dollars.

  • Watch sizes: I provide exact case measurements in millimeters (the watch industry standard) and inches, and include a U.S. quarter in one photo as a size reference. Draw the measurements on a piece of paper to help visualize the watch on your wrist. Remember, men’s vintage watches are noticeably smaller than oversized timepieces you see today. Prefer a brown strap instead of black? For most men’s watches I can switch the color before mailing; just let me know.
  • U.S. winners pay $9.75 for fully insured, safely boxed USPS shipping with door-to-door tracking. Washington State residents (and those with shipping addresses in Washington State) are required to pay 8.7% sales tax.
  • Canadian winners pay $28.00 for Global Priority Express with insurance. Other international buyers pay $44.00 (actual or below actual cost) for Global Priority Express Mail with door-to-door tracking. I cover any additional insurance fees.
  • International buyers: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are your responsibility. Please check with your country\'s customs office to confirm any additional costs prior to offerding. I ship within 24 hours of receiving cleared payment, but your local custom authorities can cause delays.
  • Payment is due within three days of sale end, unless you have contacted me prior to sale end to arrange otherwise. In accordance with policy, payments not received in four days will initiate an unpaid item case through the Resolution Center.
  • All of my watches are under warranty. In the rare event that a watch needs further service upon receipt, return the wristwatch to me (or mail it to my watchmaker, David, in New York City) at my expense. It will be corrected and quickly mailed back to you. Note: I will not pay for or offer a partial refund for work done by another watchmaker.
  • If you like unique and collectible vintage or antique wristwatches, add me as one of your favorite sellers. I specialize in American and Swiss timepieces from the 1900s to 1970s. My selection changes weekly, and is comprised of manual wind and automatic watches from the following categories: WWI trench; WWII; military; fancy case, art nouveau; art deco; mid-century modern; stainless steel; sterling silver; white, yellow and rose gold; solid gold; platinum; and diamond, ruby and/or sapphire ladies cocktail watches.
