Large Chinese Ox Bone Emperor Statue

Qing Dynasty

c. early 19th Century

1800-1849

Thisauthentic Chinese Ox Bone Emperor Statue is made of ox bone, which is not an endangered species and is legal to sell on .

Itdates to approximately to the early 19th Century (1800-1850), which is the period of the last Chinese dynasty--theQing Dynasty!

With the wooden stand, the statue measures approximately 11.25”tall and weighs about383 grams or13.5 oz.

The statue itself measures approximately 10.5\" tall x 2.12\" at the base.

The Emperor appears to to made from four (5) separate pieces of ox bone, none of which are articulated:

  • The legs and torso are the largest piece.
  • While the top piece that are the shoulders is the smallest piece.
  • The two arms are each held securely in place by 2 wooden pins or dowels. (see photo # 5)
  • The Head is held onto the body with a single wooden pin that pierces his crown on the top (see photo # 8)

The Emperor is dressed in a floor length, long rob that covers his feet and that is period correct for the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

His right hand has a small hole drilled through it that once held a small round object, perhaps a bone standard. (see photos 9-10)

His left hand holds what appears to be a book (see photo # 2), but it could also be a religious object if the statue is of an Immortal.

The bearded Emperor appears to wearing a crown that covers the sides of his head and his ears.

The natural ox bone is untreated and has developed a beautiful warm patina that can only occur after at least 200 years and perhaps as much at 250+ years. WOW!!

There are no cracks, splits, or repairs and this statue and it would be considered in very good, \"as found\" antique condition.

There is some natural age deterioration to the bone along the edges of the Emperor\'s left shoulder see photos. The wood black base has some chips on the bottom edges of the round raised corners that tends to make the statue lean slightly to the back.

The Emperor is held in place on the original wood stand by 2 wooden pins that have worked their way slightly out (see photo # 11).

The arms/shoulders and head are separate pieces and joined to main body with pegs, the statue is secured to the wood base/stand with two pegs that have worked their way slightly out and could be lightly tapped into place by a qualified expert or by the new owner if desired. I could find not find any artist\'s name or dynasty markings on the base.

I have examined this piece under 10x magnification and it shows no signs of modern tools marks--onlyhand tools were used. It has been cut, shaped, andcarved withantique handtools. If you look carefully atwooden shoulders of the Emperor, you can even seetiny circular drill holes made with a hand or foot powered, low RPM drill. These smallclues are anothersign that is statue isvery old and authentic. It is truly museum quality!

This is a unique piece of antique artthat you can addto your collection.

It would also make a super Gift!
