Fine late 17th early 18th Centurylarge capriccio of classical ruins, oil on canvas. Exquisite large work depicting figures amongst classical ruins. In the foreground an artist with assistant is sketching amongst classical ruins, a goatherd and goats nearby. The composition, soft palette, and smooth brushwork evokes an idyllic and beautiful scene. The work is remarkable for the exceptional draphtsmanship, and the stunning treatment of the sky with both the colour (citrion blending seamlessly to blue) and the soft stratocumulisclouds reflecting light. The artist excelled at the oil technique. A fine example.
Images such as this were very popular amongst 18th century collectors and patrons, particularly during the era of the “Grand Tour”, stimulated by the desire to record topographical settings. The present work was undoubtedly created for this market by an 18th century follower of Claude Lorrain (who mastered this subject along with Giovanni Panini). Good condition swept frame.
Good relined condition, patch repair verso, quality stretcher. To hang and enjoy immediately.

Claude Lorrain was a Baroque painter who excelled at landscape painting. He mastered the ability to depict sunset with beautiful citroen and blues, and his skies were unrivalled. He was a strong influence on many artists. He spent most of his life in Italy which is where he died.
