Large 20cm Acheulian Unifacial Biface/Hand axe, Found Kent a915
For sale; from my personal fieldwalking collection, is this impressive Acheulian unifacial biface/hand axe.
This tool is very large and very heavy, it has been made on a thick flint flakedetached from a nodule, it is triangular in plan and made with a robust elongated distal point. It has been unifacially worked and has some bifacial retouches, The dorsal side remains mostly cortical, the ventral base is smooth and notably convex, the lateral sides are straight. The proximal end has a large flat platform to place the fingers it has been created by a heavy tranchet removal.
It is in superb condition with even shiny patination anddetailed working.
Far better in the hand than the photos.

The Acheulian period in Britain dates from c.350,000 to c.200,000 years ago, finds in Britain from this period are rare as subsequent glaciations have swept away most of the remains.
There are a few important sites in Britain, one of those being Swanscombe in Kent, this tool was found around a mile from the famous Swanscombe site.
This tool was made by Homo heidelbergensis, Homo heidelbergensisis an extinct speciesof the genus homowhich lived in Africa, Europe and western Asia from at least 600,000 years ago, and may date back 1,300,000 years. First discovered near Heidelburgin Germany in 1907, it was described and named by Otto Schoetensack. It survived until about 250,000 to 200,000 years ago.

Neanderthals Denisovansand modern humansare all descended from Homo heidelbergensis.

Between 300,000 and 400,000 years ago, an ancestral group of H. heidelbergensis separated themselves shortly after they had left Africa. One group branched northwest into Europeand West Asia, which eventually evolved into Neanderthals. The other group ventured eastwards throughout Asia, eventually developing into Denisovans.

Homo heidelbergensis evolved into Homo Sapienapproximately 130,000 years ago.

Between 70,000 to 60,000 years ago, modern humans began their journey out of Africa, expanding into Eurasiaand encountering their ancient cousins.

This tool is part of my own personal collection that I have found over the years, this tool was found whilst fieldwalking in the Northfleet (Springhead) and Southfleet area of Kent. Thearea borders the famous Palaeolithic site at Swanscombe, which is less than a mile away.
Circumstance of discoveryThe area where this implement came from has been subjected to a great deal of disturbance through road building, Channel Tunnel High Speed Rail Link and other commercial building. It is more thanlikey that the implement had been disturbed through this construction activity.
