Large fine mid 18th Century portrait of a noblewoman, oil on canvas. Exquisite bust length portrait of a woman dressed in an expensive gold satin dress with white gathered lace sleeves, in a landscape setting. The woman has a blue mantle wrap tied with a string of pearls and gold clasp, and is adorned fashionably with a garland of flowers over her shoulder and in her powdered hair. Jean-Marc Nattier excelled in this type of graceful portrait and this is the work from his circle. Nattier, known as ‘le Jeune’, was court painter to Louis XV of France, and one of the most important portraitists of the century.
The work is utterly beautiful and charming, with the fine depiction of the flowers, the excellent drapery, and the colourful palette. Bright and cheerful and with all the tenacity of a skilled hand. Impasto is visible throughout the flowers and the white lace which is a major feature considering it’s circa 250 years of age. Housed in a fine, excellent condition Chippendale style frame. Many believe the French led the way in portraiture during this period and the present large scale portrait is highly sought after with its refined style. A fine example.
Presents in very good relined condition with fine craquelure. Can be hung and enjoyed immediately.

Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) was born in Paris. He was very accomplished and became court painter to Louis XV. Having revived the allegorical portrait, he focussed on portraits from 1720 which were very lucrative. Mainly active in Paris, but worked in Amsterdam when he was invited by Tsar Peter painting the battle of Poltava (now the Pushkin Museum, Mosou). He also worked in The Hague where he painted the portrait of Empress Catherine now in the Hermitage. His influence was far and wide not least Scottish painter, Allan Ramsay.
