Traditional German Christmas decoration
The facial expression of Nutcrackers may possibly go back to the time
when people struggled
to crack nuts manually. The sight of the funny grimaces made the children
laugh and gave inspiration to the artist & woodcrafters. Nutcrackers
in the traditional Erzgebirge style, familiar today, date back to 1870.
Today the grim looking, but peaceful fellow has lost the original
purpose of cracking nuts.
The body, arms, legs and base are made of lathe turned domestic wood.
The feet and nose are carved of pre-cut wood. The large jaws are
made of a single piece of wood and fastened with a solid metal bolt.
A total of 130 steps are necessary to make one cleverly painted
and decorated nutcracker.
From the German Christmas Museum located inside the
\"Weihnachtsdorf\", the Christmas Village.
