Large Vintage Painting High Times Mag Founder Tom King Forcade 1970's Am Outlaw For Sale
This is a very rareand original oil painting, acrylics on canvas, of a genuine American Outlaw, Thomas King Forcade, 1945-1978, founder of the infamous HIGH TIMES magazine and the UNDERGROUND PRESS SERVICE. In pristine original condition.Monumental size: 5'10"x5'8", painted from life, circa early 1970's. Signed. This is the only portrait of Mr.Forcade that was painted during his lifetime and one of the few, if only, portraits done from life of an historical figure of that genre. Besides founding HIGH TIMES, Forcade also authored several books and was the editor of Abby Hoffman's most famous publication, STEAL THIS BOOK!Out of Forcade's New York City office, UPS was the supplier of most counter-culture articles used by all the old underground press publications of the 60's and early 1970's.The painting, in fine condition with bright colors, is by the artist and his friend A.Duncan. Her work can be found in the book TITTERS, the first publication by the well know writer DeanneStillman. Theimage is based on a scene in Forcade's first book, "The Caravan Of Love And Money," Signet,NY,1972. Mr.Forcade is the figure in the white suit u/l. The other figures in the painting are the members of thelegendary NYC rock group DAVID PEEL AND THE LOWER EAST SIDEof"Have A Marijuana" and "The Pope Smokes Dope" fame. The style of painting here can be interpreted as predating and anticipating artists like Basquait and the whole urban graffiti scene.Through-out the mid 70's Forcade turned down millions of dollars for the rights of the best selling HIGH TIMES magazine. On November 16,1978, under mysterious circumstances, Tom Forcade was found lying dead on the couch of his estranged wife's home, a .22 cal.pistol shot to the head. Not seen in publicsince its original purchase.
