Large rare Thomas Gotham crystalline vase California Faience Arts and Crafts :

Rare large crystalline glazed porcelain vase signed by Thomas Gotham, West Coast Porcelain Manufacturers. Signed under the glaze with his TG monogram. Thomas Gotham (1872 - 1941) has been associated with California Faience & California Pottery. Any work by Thomas Gotham is seldom seen on the open market, by far, the majority are unsigned. Large examples like this one are quite rare, this particular shape is especially rare.
The vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs, there is one tiny flea bite or bruise on the edge of the vase at the base, it measures about 1/16\" or the size of the head of a pin, as shown in the image with the dime for scale. It is located to the right of the dime and the same size as one of the letters in \"LIBERTY\". There are three typical stint pulls which show mostly in the bottom view and are barely visible when the vase is standing. Stint pulls occur when the stints that are used to elevate the vase from the bottom of the kiln during firing are removed and a bit of the clay sticks to the stint. The glaze drips that gather on the bottom are then ground until the bottom is level it is not considered a flaw unless the stilt pull goes well up the side of the base. I have included images of all three sides of the vase and at the base of the vase. I mention the minor apolgies for the sake of accuracy as they do not distract from the overall visual impact of the vase in any way. As with most of his work, the clarity, depth and variety of color in the crystalline glaze and the contrast of the refraction of light from the varying textures of the matte and gloss areas make this a very attractive and interesting vase.
Likely produced when he was working at West Coast Porcelain Manufacturers in the mid-twenties. The value of his work has been escalating dramatically in recent years. This beautiful vase would be an excellent addition to any California art pottery, Arts and Crafts, or museum collection. Measures 8 1/2\" by 7 1/2\".
