Large tinned Byzantine enkolpion (reliquary cross).

Description:

Tinned Byzantine bronze enkolpion. Side A shows the Virgin facing in orans pose holding palm leaves, above her, mispelt abbreviation for Mother of God. The reverse shows a cross with floral motif at the century A.D.

6.9 cm (2.71 inches).

Ex Numisart,Gallery, Munich in the late 1990s.

Hinge missing at top and damage to the pin at the base so that the piece now separates into two halves. Casting hole on one arm of the reverse as shown. Heavy toned tinning with beautiful surfaces.
