In Greek mythology, the one-eyed giant Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon, tended sheep and goats in the Cyclops close to the Sicilian coast. Odysseus landed there with companions during his shipping and asked for hospitality. However, Polyphemus closed the entrance to his cave with a giant rock. Odysseus gouged the giant’s eye and escaped from the island. The giant threw a rock behind him and asked Poseidon for vengeance, which led to Odysseus’ many years of wandering.Condition: The painting shows a fine horizontal scratch in the middle, a small scratch lower right and slight craquelure. The upper part of the painting has a barely visible horizontal restoration (circa 40 cm). The inspection under UV light reveals several areas of retouching to the background of the figures.The frame shows some losses.The size of the painting is 114 x 96.5 cm, and the frame measures 124 x 107 cm
