Late 1920s MACK AC6 DUMP & NORTHWEST 70 SHOVEL- GEO WASHINGTON BRIDGE 8x10 PHOTO:
$9.99

This photo is an excellent high quality new 8” x 10” black & white glossy photo reproduction of a late 1920’s MODEL 70 NORTHWEST SHOVEL loading a MODEL ‘AC6’ MACK Dump Truck during the construction of the approach to the George Washington Bridge in NYC. Contractor was RUSCIANO & SON CORP. of the Bronx.

”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image. Laying the “SAMPLE” sheet over the photo for the scan, causes the image to be slightly yellowed. Your photo reproduction will be pure black & white with no yellow cast.

DESCRIPTION: The original photo was taken for Northwest Engineering Co. to illustrate a new Model 70 Northwest Shovel, as shown in the lower left corner box. The contractor was Rusciano & Son Corp. of the Bronx. The Mack appears to be a Model AC6 with the extended hood. The information on the lower line of the box is very difficult to read, but I believe it says the work is on the George Washington Bridge Approach. In this photo, on the cliff above on the left side, a laborer uses an air jackhammer to break up a large boulder still hanging on the rock outcropping.

GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE: This double-decked suspension bridge spans the Hudson River, connecting Manhattan in NYC to Fort Lee, NJ. Construction began in October 1927 and was opened to traffic in October 1931.

NORTHWEST 70 SHOVEL: Little is known about the Model 70 Shovel, as it is not mentioned in the Story of Northwest by Folsom & Torres. The NW Model 71 was a 2 Cu. Yd. gasoline powered Dragline/Crane produced from the 1930s to 1943. I’m assuming that perhaps the Model 70 was the early version of the Model 71. The Model 7 was produced from 1930 to 1943 as a diesel powered shovel rated at 1-5/8 Cu. Yd.

RUSCIANO & SON CORP. from Bronx, NY: From what I have learned, the company was an excavating company founded by Vincent Rusciano, with his son Anthony Rusciano later serving as president. Anthony died in 2006, but the company still survives in some form.

MACK “AC6”: The Super-Duty Model AC6 MACK was built from 1930 to 1938, with a nominal rating of 7-1/2 tons. This chain drive truck was powered with a Mack 6-cylinder 128-hp gasoline engine through a 4-speed transmission. The traditional chain-drive was retained on these new Bulldogs due to its preference in the construction industry, where the AC now received the bulk of its sales. The AC was designed to take abuse from sudden loads, uneven ground, and steep grades, found in construction work. Contractors preferred the chain-drive for its strength, efficiency, and dependability. Building projects in the early and mid-1930s helped to keep up the demand for the Bulldog, even after its heyday had passed.
