Late 19th Century Victorian Cream Wool and Lace Bustle Dress with Silk Satin Trim

Description

A beautiful late 19th century Victorian cream wool bustle dress with ruffled train and peach silk satin waistband and bow trim on the skirt. The dress consists of a front fastening, tightly fitting bodice with original hook and eyes all the way down the front, with no stays and a wide pale peach pink silk satin waistband. The sleeves are an unusual form of bishop sleeve, rolled at the elbow rather than the wrist, with white tambour lace cuffs - the neckline is trimmed with the same lace. The skirt is gathered at the back for a bustle, and has hook and eye closures at the back. There are also hook and eyes to attach the bodice over the waistband of the skirt. The skirt has the same lace trim as the bodice, which loops around the front of the skirt and up and around the hips and ends at the top of the bustle. The skirt is further adorned with 3 large pale peach pink silk satin bows on the lace made of the same material as the waistband of the bodice. The edge of the skirt has a small attached ruffle made of cream wool. The fabric is lovely - a light weight fine cream wool with a hint of very pale butter yellow - the whiteness of the lace brings out the buttery cream color beautifully. The lace is a tambour with floral embroidery on a net ground and a dragons tooth edge. The dress is lined with peach cotton, except along the bottom of the skirt which has cream wool lining the front 2.5\" of the skirt and 13.5\" along the edge of the train. There is also a wide strip of very stiff white muslin or buckram across the front of the underside of the skirt, perhaps to prevent shoe damage. The back of the train has an interlining of cotton batting, presumably to provide more weight to the train. The dress is designed to be worn with a corset, and has a tiny waist. The detailed approximate measurements of the dress are as follows:

bodice:

  • waist 23\"
  • bust (pit to pit) 34\"
  • shoulder to hem 16\"
  • shoulder to shoulder across the back 9.5\"
  • length of sleeves 8\" wool and 12\" with lace

skirt

  • waist 22.5-23\"
  • waist to hem 40\"
  • length of train 25\"

The dress fits my size 4-6 Victorian mannequin nicely. The garment has been freshly laundered and is nice and clean. The wool is strong and soft. I can find no holes in the lace. As can be expected with a garment that is 140 years old or more, there are some minor signs of age and wear as follows:

  • some of the original hooks and eyes around the waist have been replaced with newer ones
  • there is some deterioration of the silk satin waistband especially on the right side front - this could be easily covered with a nice sash (see photo)
  • there is also some deterioration of the silk satin bows, but mostly fraying and they still appear strong and are not shattering
  • the cream wool has a few tiny holes here and there (mostly singly but a few in small groups) - I have shown the worst and largest area with a few tiny holes together. I suspect these holes to be moth nips, but there is no evidence of moth activity, either new or old, other than these nips.
  • there is one slit type hole on the left hip near the waistband of the skirt - a few stitches would fix this
  • there is a jagged hole on the underside of the train - about 2\" x 3\" where it looks to me like the wool probably caught on something rough when the dress was worn and now it needs a patch. However this is on the underside of the train and would not be seen if the dress was displayed. See photo. You can see the cotton batten inside the end of the train in the hole, and the photo also shows the cream wool panel on the end of the train and the buff/peach cotton lining above that. The underside of the train, and the cotton batten inside the hole, like the rest of the dress, are very clean.
  • there is another area on the bottom of the train that has a number of small holes - they also look like the train caught on something rough but the holes are tiny and irregular. These do not look like moth nips, but rather like picks in the fabric. The largest hole is 1/4\" x 1\" and the rest are small circular holes around 1/4\" each - there are a number of these holes concentrated in only one area under the train of about 4\" x 6\" on the opposite side of the train to the larger hole.
  • the lace is dettached from the waist of the skirt at the bustle area on one side, and needs a few stitches

None of these minor issues detracts from the elegance of this lovely cream wool dress, which is in an wonderful state of preservation for its age. A complete lack of wear on the bottom hem edging indicates that this garment did not have much wear. Perhaps this was a wedding dress, or perhaps a special occasion dress. It is absolutely gorgeous, petite and elegant, and what a great piece for decorating a Victorian bedroom because of the neutral tone of the buttery cream wool dress. The dress is shown without a bustle. This is NOT a reproduction. This is an original, late 19th century Victorian, cream wool bustle dress with train and lace and satin trim, only from Antiquarius Antiques. If you are looking for new and perfect, then vintage is probably not for you. In many cases, vintage clothing has been worn and is no longer new, and that is why it is such a good bargain. Excellent antique or vintage condition rarely means new - do not expect new or perfect as there will almost always be some signs of wear, especially with older items. Sometimes we sell newer vintage items that are new old stock (NOS) so they have never been worn and can be in such excellent condition that there are no signs of wear. But some of the garments we sell are 75 years old or more, and even if they were never worn, the fabric may show signs of wear just from being stored all those years. Please assume that older vintage and antique items may have a little dust and/or a few age spots, unless we have specifically stated that we have recently laundered the item. Nevertheless, vintage is a great way to dress extravagantly without having an extravagant budget. You can often find extraordinary examples of antique, vintage or designer items that are wearable textile art and will make you look like a million bucks!
