Beautiful Early Antique Staffordshire Flatback Piece featuring a Couple/Children with Clock and DeerStanding about 12 inches high/9.5\" widest points and nicely colored this Staffordshire flatback statue is in good condition for its age. Minor damage (deer ear is chipped); no restoration that I can see. Some crazing to finish but no chips. Paint in good condition, with some minor paint loss.

Appearance & Subject: \"This is flatback clock piece figure group
of two children with a deer. The deer which stands between the children, and under
the clock is relatively small, so I guess it would be a
a fawn, as the piece was produced before the diminutive
Muntjac was introduced to Britain. The girl is wearing a blouse with a long skirt and apron.
She is carrying flowers in her apron, and holding a rose
to her chestin her right hand. The boy is standing cross legged, in a long line coat or
jacket over a frilled shirt, and knee breeches. His left
hand is on his hip, and in his right hand holds a large
jug which rests on top of the clock. There are grapevines in fruit decoratingfront of the jug
and surrounding the clock face. There are touches of colour to the children\'s clothes,
red to the frills at their necklines, a little purple on the
fringe of a scarf around the boy\'s neck, and yellow to
the hem of the girl\'s skirt. Plus there is a discreet little
repeating leaf pattern on the girl\'s skirt in green and red.
They also have black shoes and the boy\'s stockings
are coloured. The children havenatural skin tones and brown hair, and
the deer in a light cinnamon with touches of black. The girl\'s flowers and the grapevines are decorated in
green, red and purple with small touches of yellow. The piece sits on an oval base, with alow plinth edge
with a line of gilt around the front. There are also touches
of gilt on the children\'sclothes and on the jug.

The gilt which is present is \"Best Gold\". This was applied
as a powder mixed with oil, fired and then burnished.
The alternative \"Bright Gold\" was simply painted on at the
end of the production process, and was never fired.Another desirable feature of this piece is that there is a
blue tint to the glaze. This is evident in the white areas
especially where there is a pooling of the glaze. This is
caused by the metals in the glaze, particularly the lead I
believe. It is a sought after feature, which many collectors
see as a proof of originality. The group appears in the A. & N. Harding work \"Victorian
Staffordshire Figures 1835 - 1875\" V.2 Pg.128 Fig. 2152.The group displays thetypical naivetreatment of the
subject withthe refined quality of production that reached
a pinnacle in Staffordshire during the Victorian age. This is a particularly fine example, much earlier out of the
moulds than the example shownby theHardings, and as
a consequence much better defined. It is also more vibrant
and stronglycoloured.\"VERY DECORATIVE PIECEManufacture: Staffordshire, unmarked - factory unknown.
