Over the next severalmonths I will be disposing of a collection of Royal Memorabilia, to include alarge quantity of china collectables, mostly the more rare items issued duringthe reigns of Queen Elizabeth II, George VI, George V, Edward VIII, Edward VIIand Queen Victoria.

Offered withoutreserve and a very low starting price is a beautiful, limited editionCoalport plate (#168 of 1,000) commemorating the three hundredth anniversary ofthe establishment of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea in 1682.

This very attractive and uncommon plate measuresapproximately 11 inches in diameter. Boxed, it weighs 811 grams or 1 lb 12 ½ounces. The obverse depicts the front entrance of the Royal Hospital, a famous Londonlandmark and home to the famous Chelsea Pensioners with their bright reduniforms and Tricorn hats. The image is surrounded by the Latin inscription ingilt “IN SUBSIDIAN ET LEVAMEN, EMERITORUM SENIOR, BELLOQUE FRACTORUM, CONDIDITCAROLUS SECUNDUS, AUXIT JACOBUS SECONDUS, PERFECERE GULIELMUS ET MARIA, REX ETREGINA, MDCXCII”. Roughly translated as “For the succour and relief of old soldiers and men broken by war, founded byKing Charles II, enlarged by King James II, completed by King William and QueenMary in 1692.” The lip of the plate is embellished in maroon and gilt withacorn wreaths, headed by the Royal Cypher of Queen Elizabeth II, with the Orderof the Garter at the base; and with the dates 1682 and 1982 at the 9 and 3o’clock positions respectively.

The reverse bearsthe gilt inscription under the glaze “Tercentenary of the Royal Hospital1682-1982 and the English translation of the Latin inscription (above). Underthis is “Limited Edition of 1,000 pieces, Piece no 168; followed by theCoalport logo with the registered trade mark and “Made in England”.

The plate iscontained in the original box, with some scuffs. It rests on a bed of creamsatin and comes with the original Coalport book-bound certificate signed by theGovernoer of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea and the Managing Director of Coalport.
