Description:

This “going to market” original watercolor painting is approx. 13” high x 8½” wide, archival matted to 18” x 12 ½”, and framed in the original frame to 185/8” x 13” overall. It features aMexican couple with burro, the woman with a tray of fruit on her head. This early piece is signed and dated “LeoPoliti, 1934” in the lower right. It isin good vintage condition with a new archival matte. The original frame shows light wear, sold asis.

Notes: Leo Politi (American, 1908-1996) was born inFresno, California, but moved to Italy with his parents and in 1924 won ascholarship to the National Art Institute near Milan. In 1931, he left Italy and settled in LosAngeles, California. There he worked asan art editor of Viking Press as well as an illustrator. He exhibited at the Delphi Studios, NYC, thePennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Watercolor Annual, Painters & Sculptorsof LA, the DeFerrante Gallery, Los Angeles, and others. He created a number of mrals for libraries inMonterey, South Pasadena, Fresno, and Los Angeles. Duringhis career he won many awards, including the Caldecott Medal.
