Note: A. Hoen & Company: A German immigrant, August Hoen founded his lithographic company in Baltimore in the mid 1850\'s. Around a decade later he relocated his firm to Richmond, Virginia, and became best known for his layered, five-color printing techniques. A. Hoen & Company was responsible for some of the most elaborate and beautiful images in this medium. These works of art were created for the T. C. Williams Company as advertisements for the company\'s Tobacco products. These lithographsare striking examples of the color printing created by the American printer, A. Hoen & Company.
Chromolithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for publishing everything from fine art and posters to post cards and advertisements during the latter half of the nineteenth century. The far less costly advancements of photomechanical methods, however made this original and complex form of printmaking all but obsolete by 1930. Companies were quick to recognize the vast potential of this color technique. Beginning around 1870, advertisers regularly allied their products to appealing visual images. In the following decades, these companies were creating the most expensive and elaborate works, spending thousands of dollars on additional techniques, such as raised printings, bronzing, embossing and multiple hues. As antique artworks, advertising images (more than any other form) reflect the true tastes of the times. The more colors seen in a chromolithograph, the more valuable the print is.
