Louis Wain\'s Dog Painting Book, part of Father Tuck\'s \"Little Artists\' Series\", published by Raphael Tuck & Sons. No copyright year is listed, but others from the series were published circa 1910, and WorldCat lists this as 1911.
This large (26 cm. tall, or approx. 8 X 10.25 in.) paperback contains 15 leaves, including the color illustrated front and back covers. Inside, there are 13 color illustrations with a short caption, showing dogs in humorous poses, and on the facing pages are the mirror images, to be colored in. Some of the illustrations occupy a full page, some are two to a page (the latter are separated by perforations).
Louis Wain (1860 - 1939) was renowned at the turn of the last century for his artwork, most of which involved fanciful, even surrealistic portrayals of cats, which were often displayed in postcards, greeting cards and books. Perhaps the most interesting pieces showed cats playing diabolo! He was obsessed with this art form, and when the public\'s interest began to wane, he was unable to support himself and his family, spending the final years of his life in a psychiatric institution.
This is one of his more restrained works, for sure, and unusual for having dogs as the subject matter.
The book is in good condition. The stapled binding has rusted, and the worst flaw is that the inner two leaves have separated from the bottom two staples (and are holding on precariously to the top one). The book though is complete and unmarked. The top corner of the front cover has a small scuff, suggesting a sticker was removed there. Bottom corners of the covers are bumped and worn, and the top/back corner is peeled back a little. Light oxidation stains front and back. 8 of the blank illustrations have been colored in, but most just a little (a touch of red to the lips or collars, and carefully, at that). All of the leaves are pictured above. Finally, the very first perforated border (underneath the blank illustration of the dog in the flower pot) has opened up about one inch from the edge.
