A Lovely Antique Mid-Victorian Brown and Black/Grey Striped Silk Taffeta Crinoline Day Dress dated to between 1865-1868 - Size M

Description

This is a lovely example of a mid-Victorian crinoline day dress made at a time when the crinoline changed size and shape and stretched towards the back (but pre-first bustle period)(please see the fashion plates above showing similar gowns dating to between 1865-1868). Stripes were fashionable in those years.
I believe this dress is American in origin.
The dress is made of mid-brown, grey and black striped silk taffeta.The bodice part is lined with brown cotton and the sleeves are lined with polished cotton. The shoulders and the long, fully tailored sleeves are adorned with very dark brown velvet ribbon/tape. The bodice is partially boned.
The skirt is lined with polished brown cotton and has a deep internal silk pocket hidden in the folds.
The dress is of course entirely handsewn.The dress closes with velvet covered buttons (one button is missing) and with hooks and eyes.This dress was designed to be worn over several petticoats and a steel cage crinoline. The dress is shown over a modern crinoline that is not included in this sale.The dress is probably a modern size UK 12-14 (EU 38-44, US 8-10)(but please check the measurements to be certain, particularly the waist measurement! - I use the M&S size guide) and its measurements are as follows (measured when lying flat):Length (shoulder to hem): 53.5\" (front); 58.5\" (back)Bust: 19\" (ca. 38\" all around)Waist: 14\" (ca. 28\" all around)Width at shoulder: 20\" (please note that this dress has dropped shoulders)Length of sleeves: 20\"
Width at hem: 65\" (ca. 130\" all around)This dress is in excellent condition for its age, with very minor flaws (all shown in the photo montages): there is a very small L-shaped tear near the hem of the skirt that needs attention. Otherwise, this dress is structurally sound! I also found a few small antique repairs on the skirt part as shown in the photos above - see last photos. Nothing to worry about and hard to see.
The dress is in clean condition, BUT the skirt does have some water stains on the front hem and the bodice has two smudges on one shoulder and underarm perspiration stains (see last photos).
