This masterpiece is from our rare printcollection. It is a superb work by Hashimoto Chikanobu (Japanese, 1838-1912), one of the greatest ukiyo-eartists of the Meiji era (1868-1912). It is his Cuckoo over an Iris Garden. Chikanobuwas from a distinguished samurai family. As a youth he studied under bothKuniyoshi and Kunichika. Though he designed many warrior and kabuki prints, heis perhaps best known for his marvelous bijin-ga, or beauty portraits, such asthose in this magnificent triptych.
