Grant in his own hand to Generals Edward Ord and George Meade stating that he was returning to Washington for 4-5 days and tokeepColonel Theodore S. Bowersadvised of all movements or changes as his Army is pursuing General Lee near Petersburg and Richmond Virginia.

The message was written by General Grant on paper using ink, and was subsequentlytelegraphed to Ord and Meadefrom City Point Va.

Themessage reads as follows:

(Cipher) 11 am (in pencil)

City Point Va Feb. 9th 1865

Maj Gen Ord & Meade,

I will leave here at 12 pm for Washington to remain absent four or five days unless sooner recalled. Please inform Col. Bowers of all movements or changes so that he may keep me advised.

U.S. Grant

Lt. Gen

The word \"cipher\" was meant to send the telegraph message in code so it could not be read if it was intercepted by Confederate forces.

The documentis bright and crisp with a couple of light mailing folds. It is housedin a large wooden gold frame (15 x 21 inches) for wall display with professional matting. The document itself is on paper about 8 x 10 inches.

There is a copy of a photograph General Grant with Colonel Bowers on his right below the document for visual reference.

The General Grant note has a Letter of Authenticityby PSA/DNA expert John Reznikoff and a Certificateof Authenticity from the R & R Enterprises Autograph sale, a charter member UACC # RD043 Manuscript Society.

On Feb. 5-7 Grant led an offensive at Hatcher\'s Run Va. with the aim of blocking Confederate supply routes and seizing control of the final railroad with access to Petersburg. Although the Confederate forces held, Grant was able to move Union troops 3 miles closer to the railroad.

One of reasons for General Grant\'s return to Washington was possibly to confer with President Lincoln on the results of his recent Hampton Roads Peace Conference held On February 3 1865 with Confederate representatives on the River Queen paddle boat.General Grantassisted with the safe passage of the Confederate dignitaries to his headquarters at City Point Virginia and then on toHampton Roads for the meeting with the President. General Grant did not attend the meeting.

This is an excellent opportunity to own a piece of CivilWar History in the form of a war dated and written letter byGeneral U.S. Grant to Generals Ord and Meade.
