LUCRETIA MOTT

WOMEN\'S RIGHTS ACTIVIST

- 1880-

This item consists of an original obituary of Lucretia Mott, accompanied by her engraved likeness, which were published in 1880, shortly after her death. Thisobituary was somewhat unusual in that it was written in the form of “Personal Reminiscences of LucretiaMott,” and rather than simply reviewing the facts of her life and career,it focuses on presenting a more personal picture of this great woman.
Lucretia Mott was one of the outstanding Women’s Rights advocates of the Nineteenth Century – along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott in 1848 organized the first women’s rights convention in history. She was, of course, also an ardent Abolitionist, and her home served as a safe house for fugitive slaves traveling via the “Underground Railroad.”

A very nice piece of historical memorabilia relating to the Women\'s Rights movement in the United States almost a century and a half ago.

This image is referred to as a “wood engraving” because the plate it was printed from was made from an engraved block of wood – as opposed to, for example, a “steel engraving” or a “copper engraving” (which were printed from directly engraved metal plates). This engraving, along with the accompanying obituary, was printed in Harper’s Weekly 137 years ago. [Note: This engraving was based on a photograph, but because the technology was not yet available for Harper’s to reproduce a photograph directly, photos were only used as the basis for an engraving. In effect, the engraver used the photo as a model for his wood engraving, which had to be drawn on a block of wood and then engraved by hand.]

SIZE: This engraving measures about six inches by five inches, but it hasn\'t been \"cut to size,\" and (along with several unrelated items) it is still on the original full page on which it was published, measuring about 15 inches by 11 inches overall - what is being offered in this sale is this original complete page, on the back of which the lengthy obituary is printed, taking up about half of the page.

CONDITION: This great piece of women\'s rights history is in excellent condition, with no significant flaws and free even of the lightest traces of the \"foxing\" or age-browning that spoils the appearance of so many images this old.

This item is original – It was printed at the time of Lucretia Mott’s death, 137 years ago – it is guaranteed to be authentic, and not a later reprint or any type other of reproduction

I’m a longtime collector, not a dealer, and over the past 55+ years I collected a great variety of historical memorabilia. After retiring, I decided it was time to sell some of the items from my various collections, and I have found a very good way to reach other collectors who might be interested in some of these.

Please see the comments in my “response” for how others have evaluated the quality of antique items from my collection that I have previously sold on .
