Offered here is another USGI original walnut front / rear hand guard set I have refurbished. These guards had a few cracks in the usual areas and the front guard was split down one side. During the refinishing process and as part of the repair process the underside of both front & rear guards were reinforced with a high quality epoxy designed to join wood. These guards are far, far tougher now than they ever were. As they were by the military during the war, the guards were again dyed, with the classic WWII reddish-brown finish, but not heavy enough to hide the beauty of the black walnut and showing enough golden hues and ruddy shade to match the finish characteristics of WWII stocks that 70 years worth of oxidized raw linseed oil creates. The front guard has a beautiful burl-like pattern dead center on the right side where the wood grain reveals a pattern characteristic of a forming branch.
Both front and rear hand guards underwent a thorough and professional cleaning and de-greasing with hot water rinses, a process experienced craftsman know is mandatory for proper wood preservation and restoration, as well as dent removal. All crack repairs and veneering was donewith a marine grade epoxy system designed specifically for adherence to wood, and all of the generally susceptible areas have been coated on the underside to prevent future problems unless stated otherwise above. The resin itself has been oxidized to closely match the color of aged walnut treated with Linseed &/or Tung oil. After degreasing, repairing, filling & sanding, veneering & etc., the hand guards were stained and given coats of BTO &/or BLO, with a final hand-rub of BLO, Beeswax and turpentine (Gunny\'s Paste) or as appropriate an oil / petroleum based wax formulation.
As a visual aid in determining the final finish color, the last two photos of this set was mounted with hardware to a spare barrel & mounted to a refinished WWII SA GAW stock and aligned with 3 Garand rifles. All guards in this photo including the set for sale here are mounted using SA arched middle bands and SA front hand guard ferrules and spacers. This hand guard and clip set is easily identified by the lack of receiver and the exposed barrel threads behind the rear hand guard. In the first of the two photos, there is an HRA with a pristine DAS stock at the bottom, the set for sale here followed by an October 1942 EMcF stocked and a 1941 GHS long-channel stocked Garands. respectively. The next and last photo was taken from the other side, thus the order just given is reversed.
