HUGE, RARE Classic Moderne DESK LAMP by Smith Metal Arts or Silver Crest Co.This lamp is exactly as it was when put away in the 1950s, and came to me from a San Francisco Estate Sale. Huge at 12 1/2 pounds, being solid bronze the base is 5 1/2 x 16 inches, the shade is 6 1/2 wide x 18 inches long. The lamp itself stands about 13 inches tall. The Seth Thomas clock works perfectly, the deco dial is perfect, the curved glass is original, setting the time is easy from the back. The four light sockets in the shade take bulbs that I am not familiar with. I do not know if there are sockets for four smaller bulbs or for two 18\" long bulbs. They are not the regular florescent I know of. Be Sure To Look At The Photos Of The Bulb Sockets. The white enameled inner reflector in the shades bulb housing has no oxidation or scratches. The shades posts have finger tightened ball and socket adjustments for tilting. It does not raise and lower but only tilts as seen in the photos.
The solid bronze lamp shade, posts, clock case and base all have the original bronze patina, guaranteed. A magnet will not stick to any of the case or shades surfaces. It has not been buffed or polished, stripped or painted or fiddled with in any way and all of the finishes look old and soft/dull and not new or shiney/polished. There are small spots or areas of oxidation here and there but nothing unsightly by any means. There are a few trim pieces like around the clock face, the shade edges, pen rests and placard that are silvered color, contrasting the bronze sheet work. The underside of the base has the original green felt typical of the era. The silvered name placard on lower front of the base has not been engraved, and there are no owners names anywhere on the base or lamp shade. The back of the clock and base below is stamped as you can see in the photos with \"Silver Crest Genuine Bronze\" logo, the number \"225\" that I assume to me a model designation and 110V 60AC 3W. Next to that is a UL sticker. On the lower base portion is a \"Underwriters Laboratories Portable Lamp Issue 490 Smith Metal Arts Co. Inc. Buffalo New York\" decal.
The only negative issues with this lamp/clock are the light bulbs. Can they be found or not.
