MID 19TH CENTURY WELSH FLORAL MOTIF & CHURCH SAMPLER BY LEAH DAVIES - 1874:

Mid 19th century Welsh sampler by Leah Davies - 1874. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The centre of the gauze is stitched with Leah\'s interpretation of Pendoylan Church which is not only charming but pretty accurate too. (I found the church on the internet) The church has its name stitched in red beneath followed by Leah\'s details Pendoylan Church Leah Davies Aged 13 Year 1874\" There is a sumptuous floral bouquet above the church, whilst each side is stitched with a tree, bird and butterfly. The church is then surrounded by a spectacular border of a large floral swag at each corner of the gauze, all connected by a meandering ribbon alternated with diamond motifs.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, quite dark. The colours of the wool are good, albeit not quite as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and shows how rich the colours were when Leah first stitched it. As can also been seen from the photographs, the side and bottom edges of the gauze have been cut at some point of time whilst the top edge shows visible tack marks where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher at some point of time.
