An excerpt from the description that accompanied the print:
The order of the Carmelites took its origin from theearly resort of pious recluses to a place frequented of old by the prophetsElijah and Elisha. Some of the fraternity accompaniedSt. Louis on his return from Syria to France, and others had previouslyformed an establishment in Italy. The monks are cheerful and social beings,and trouble themselves but little about the affairs of theworld, devoting much of their attention to the duties of their religion,to benevolence, and hospitality, which latter virtues they consider asspecially belonging to their order. The necessary funds for the buildingthe convent, which occupied six years, have been in a great measure raisedby the personal exertions of one of the brotherhood, an able architectappointed by the papal government to plan and superintend the edifice.In the centre is the church, the dome of which is seen above the flat roof.It is a fine and spacious building, handsomely decorated: the principalaltar is placed over the cave so long held sacred as the retreat of theprophet Elijah.
