MIKIMOTO 14K Gold+11 Akoya PEARL Pin~8.5 Grams~Signed Brooch~ClamShell~14 Karat

Featuring thehighqualitygenuine pearls for which Mikimoto is world famous, this vintage14 Karat Yellow Goldbrooch boasts a graceful, flowing design. Animated and lively, the dimensional designconveys a great deal of motion, almost like a tornado of whirling pearls caught up in swirlingcurrents of gold.Theplacement of thethree smaller pearls, as if they wereset in motion on separate trajectories to orbit about the rest, or perhaps to join them, is a small but important detail that adds immeasurably to the design of the brooch. It has loads ofdramatic energy as if the tapering loops ofgold can scarcely contain their bouquet of pearl balloons. Viewed at some angles, as with the cluster of pearls on the left or pointing down, it makes me think of a lavishly abundantcornucopia, heavily laden withits bounty of cascading pearls. It is one of those brooches that looks good in any direction in which you care to pin it. And the combination of textures and materials- creamy pearls and gleaminggold - is reallyluminous and eye catching. The pearls are beautifully matched and lustrous, with a gorgeous glow that has a bit of rose pink along with reflections of the other pearls, which is quite mesmerizing with movement in the play of light. (The curving reflective surfaces of the pearls and ribbonsof gold make it difficult to get a good photo; the brooch is much nicer in person!)

Graceful and expressive, it is large enough to be impressive. Measuring just over 1-3/4\" across byabout 1\" by about 1/2\" deep, the brooch haseleven pearls with great luster, ranging in size fromabout4 mm to 7-1/2 mm. It weighs8.5 grams.

It is signed on the back \"K Mikimoto Tokyo\" along withtheir \"M\" in an Akoya oyster (or clam) shell and \"K14\". (Nextto lastphoto.)

According to their website, \"Mikimoto pearls are referred to as hanadama, or \'flower pearls\', which denotes the highest quality pearls. Over one hundred years ago, in 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in producing the world\'s first cultured pearl.... Only the top 5% of the pearl harvest meets the strict quality standards of Mikimoto.\" For over a century, Mikimoto has been the King of Pearl Jewelry witha devoted circle of collectors. Looking at this brooch, you can certainly see why.

It came to me from a high end San Francisco estateand isin Excellentvintage condition withjustexpected irregularities in the natural pearls, surface dirt andlight scratches. Absolutely nothing of consequence. (Apologies for the annoying reflections, shadowsand \"hot spots\" you see in the photos, whichare due to camera distortion only.)

Jewelry like this never goes out of style or down in value (in fact, the value ofMikimoto jewelry, like this pin, just keeps going up) and this brooch belongs equally in collections of Gold, Pearlsand Signed Jewelry. So versatile,it looks good in any direction in which it is pinned (as I have tried to show in the photos). It will go with everything, night or day to work or play and is one you will find you wear all the time.Itwould make a terrific gift, although it is so all-purpose, I doubt you will want to part withit, and will come to you in a gift box, just in case.
