ABOUT LAND GRANTS AFTER 1833
WhenPresident Andrew Jackson returned to the White House from the Hermitage,
hishome in Tennessee, in February 1833, he found over 10,000 land grants to sign.
He complained to Congress; he had important issues to deal with.
OnMarch 2, 1833, “An Act prescribingthe mode by which Patents for
Public Lands shall be signed and executed” wasapproved by both Houses of Congress.
In part:
“Be it enacted, &c. That itshall be lawful for the President of the United States,
by and with the adviceand consent of the Senate, to appoint a Secretary ...whose duty it
shall be, under thedirection of the President,to sign his name, and for him…”
President Millard Fillmore wroteto the Congressthat he hadauthorizedhis
secretary Alexander McCormicktosign patents for public lands (land grants).
This is one of them - not personally signed by Millard Fillmore.

\"That in addition to the present military establishment
of the United Statesthere shall be raised and organized,
under the directionof the President,for and during the
war with Mexico ...And be it further enacted, That each non-
commissioned officer, musician, or private enlisted
or to be enlistedin the regular army, or regularlymustered
in any volunteercompany for a periodof not less than
twelve months,who has served or may serve during the present
war with Mexico, and shall receive an honorable discharge ...
shall be entitledto receive a certificate or warrant from the
War Departmentfor the quantity ofone hundred and sixty acres,
and which may be located by the warrantee, orhis heirs at law
at any land office in the United States... and upon the return
of such certificate or warrant, with evidenceof the location thereof
havingbeen legally made, to the General Land Office,
a patent shall be issued therefor...\"
In1845, the Republic of Texaswas annexed to the United States
becoming the 28th U.S. state.When the Mexican War began in1846,
several companies of Texas Rangers,Texas Volunteer Regiments of
Cavalry (mounted volunteers),were mustered into federal service
andfought withthe U.S. Army in the Mexican War.
In October 1846, Henry W. Baylor raised Company Eof Maj. Michael Chevallie\'s
battalion of Texas mounted volunteers and was elected its Captain. CaptanBaylor\'s
company was recruited in San Antonio and was in federal servicefromJune 17, 1847,
through June 30, 1848, attached to Gen. Zachary Taylor\'sheadquarters.Charles Dallman
was a Private in Captain Baylor\'s Company Major Chevallie\'sBattalion of Texas cavalry.

I was the handwriting expert contacted in the \"1775 Almanac\" episode on the PBS series \"History Detectives\" which was televised on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. I was asked to identify the writer of the notes handwritten on the pages of the almanac, notes that recorded, among other events, the Battles of Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill. The unknown owner of the almanac had used it as a diary.
