This is a small antique, early style tall crown, completely handmade sombrero, similar to those made for the South of the Border tourist trade; but with a 1904 dated double ribbon MARKED EL PASO, TEXAS ~ MAY 3-5, 1904, made for the popular Charro Days Celebration held in Mexican border cities. Note the ribbon is extremely fragile, and falling apart; and probably would not survive any handling when shipped. Thus, I am selling this with no ribbon; and if it survives shipping, maybe someone would want to affix a backing to the ribbon and partially restore it. It is about 4 3/4\" in diameter, The crown is about 1 3/4\" tall, and weighs .5 ounces. This piece is handmade from braiding thin strands of straw together, flattening the strands, and then hand stitching the pieces together to create the sombrero starting from the top of the crown; and shaping it into an early high crown style of sombrero. The weaving is intact. The top of the brim has coiled loops created by hand wrapping thin wire around a cotton base to make the thin cotton cord that that also is used as a 3 strand hatband. This non-uniform hand wrapping can be seen under magnification; and is now a lost art. There are a few areas of the cord where the wire has broken and the cotton cord is is puffy (see images). This piece was made with no liner to the inside of the crown. This tall, early crown style, dates to 1904 from the ribbon. This souvenir sombrero is in as expected, average condition overall with a dark natural aged patina, and still displays well; with or without the ribbon (if it were removed or not repairable).
