This sword was an Estate Sale Find in a home in Queens, New York City and it is in good shape for its age. Thebrass hilt has three branches andone of the branches has a crack in it (see photos). Thescabbard is pitted with rust but it has a great patina look. The maker mark forCR Kirschbaum, Solingen is aknights head and it is partially worn off the blade. Only the face shield of the knights head remains and can be seen in the photos.

The model1840 saber,called the \"wrist breaker\",was was arelatively

heavycavalry saber, and as it was manufactured before the CivilWar, it sawextensive use by both sides during the war.Standardfeatures include arelatively straightwooden handle covered withleather and a wire grip,brass hilt has three branches, brass pommel cap and guardare unadorned, steel blade has flat back with narrow and wide fuller stopped atthe ricasso, iron scabbard with iron mountings, throat issecured byasinglerivet and is European origin.Manufactured

byCRKirschbaum, Solingen Prussia. Swords were supplied to state and localmilitia units, and were not Federal Inspected.

Marks:ricassoismarked,with graphic of a knight\'s head.Blade length 36in.
