FINELY CARVED ANTIQUEJAPANESE GILTAND LACQUERED WOOD BUDDHA STATUE

Museum Quality,Edo Period (1603-1868)

Exquisitegilt wooden statue depicting the seated Buddha upon a multi-tiered lotus base.Magnificent, museum qualitypiece with sublime, finely detailed carving. Seated in kekka fuza (lotus position), clad in a flowing dhoti, the hands in hokkai jo-in, mudra of the meditation of the world of cosmic law. Rising behind the figure, a spectacular and ornate mandorla of rolling flaming clouds. The Buddha\'s face exhibits great serenity and features gyokugan (inlaid crystal eyes), and an insetcarnelianrepresents thebyakugō (third eye spot) on the forehead.A secondary urna of carnelian is set into his intricately carved coiffure of tight curls. The statue is supported upon a graceful lotus blossom, beneath which stands a layered dais with minute carved flowers, phoenix birds, and lotuses, all resting upon swirling clouds whichreflect the exquisite mandorla.Too much to list, see photos for all the splendid detail.
