A digital document: MacDill Field Florida, WWII, 36 pages in PDF format.

This description is from the booklet:

The first plane landed at MacDill Field on January 14, 1941. Today MacDill Fields a 5700-acre site located six miles south of Tampa, Fla., is the largest heavy bombardment air base in the Southeast.
This great base trains the crews that fly America\'s \"Battleships of the Air.\" It is the home station of the 3rd Bomber Command which includes 11 states.
Air experts predict MacDill soon will become the best air field in the world, as its wide concrete runways with \"zero\" approaches from every angle make it one of the finest and safest landing fields in the country. Visibility is perfect from every approach. Bounded on three sides by water, it affords perfect clearance for all take-offs and landings. Because of its Strategic location and its other exceptional qualifications it has been selected as the permanent air base for the Southeast section of the United States.
The field was named in honor of Colonel Leslie MacDill, who was killed when the airplane he was piloting crashed at Anacostia, D. C., November 9, 1938. Born in Monmouth, Ill., February 18, 1889, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1912 in the Coast Artillery Corps. He received the rating of Junior Military Aviator July 2, 1915 at the Signal Corps Aviation School, San Diego, Calif., which at that time was the Army Air Corps. During World War I he served as Commander of the Aerial Gunnery School at St. Jean de Monte, France. At the time of his death, he was on the War Department General Staff in Washington, D. C.
