Magnificent 1940\'s or 50\'s Dobbs Fedora: 7 1/2:
$232.50

Here\'s a prize of a vintage fur felt fedora from that coveted mid-century era when hats were at their best. I moved from the Pacific Northwest to sunny California --- too warm a climate for this beauty. This is a Dobbs Twenty, which boasted some of most luxurious felt on the market, rivaling that of the best Stetson, Borsalino, Knox, or you name it. Dense, supremely malleable, warm, wonderful stuff with no problems whatsoever. The ample 3- inch brim also has a molded edge treatment that Dobbs dubbed the \"Guild Edge.\" This technique is a lost craft, unavailable on modern hats. It\'s a hallmark of excellence and a marvel to examine in person. And the color! I\'ll call it \"ineffable,\" and let the new owner come up with the right name. The photos show it accurately, and one of them was taken outside to show the difference in daylight. The 2-inch ribbon is a deep rich sanguine color with a classic bow, doubled in the rear. In the photo I took of the rear of the hat, you\'ll perhaps notice a slight darker streak, barely perceptible unless you\'re looking for it. No liner.Sweatband shows some wear, but is soft and strong, has solid stitching, and two small (3/8 inch) embossed letters near the rear in gold: JB. A wee bit of harmless verdigris is present, as seen in one of my photos. One of the best features of this fine lid are its proportions, as you can see from the pictures. As it is now shaped, the crown is 4 3/4 inches at the tallest point, 4 1/2 at the front, and 4 1/8 in back. There is plenty of felt to play with, though, so if you prefer a slightly taller crown, go ahead and personalize it to your specs.Larger sizes like this 7 1/2 are tough to find, as you know. The oval head opening is 8 inches by 6 5/8.Selling this awesome hat may cause me sorrow later, but not if it goes to an appreciative new owner, so offer well and don\'t let this one pass.I may pull the sale if no offerding activity happens, as \"sniping\" in the last seconds of the sale is something I wish to avoid. Questions are welcome. Thanks, and good luck!
