Mattel saw an opportunity and introduced the Major Matt Mason Line, one of the first educational toys for boys over 5. Designed to entertain kids and kick start their imagination for exploring space peacefully. Some of the accessories actually came from NASA’s own ideas. To keep the line of interest to kids they needed to ad new figures and accessories. Callisto was the alien friend they added to expand the line.
