March 14, 1864 Civil War Pass -- Headquarters First Massachusetts Artillery:
$46.00

This is an original Civil War Pass issued March 14, 1864 by Headquarters First Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. It appears to have been issued at Fort Whipple (later renamed Fort Myer). The document instructs, \"Guards and Patrol: Pass Sergt Pool Co. C to Washington, and return.\"\"This Pass will expire 5 oclock P.M (no extensions)\"\"Approved by command of Col. Thos. R. Gannatt Commanding Brigade\"\"Approved by command of Col. Thos. R. Gannatt Commanding 1st Reg\'t Mass. Heavy Artillery\"The pass is signed by Edward Hobbs, 1st Lt and A.A.A.G. and by J. McDow, Lt and Regimental Adjutant.Across the right end it says, \"Approved, by command of\" (lined out) and is signed W A. Rolfe, Major 1st Mass HA, Comdg Bat.Take a close look at the pictures. You may have an easier time deciphering some of the handwriting than I.This pass is over 149 years old; and, it shows normal wear and discoloration for a document of that age.It has been folded in half both vertically and horizontally. There are some small tears at the ends of the creases. The lower right corner is slightly dog-eared.There is a small hole in the middle of the top margin and what appears to be a matching indentation at the bottom. When viewed from the back it appears to me that those markings are the result of the pass having been impaled on a paper spike while folded horizontally (probably after it was turned in).All of the blemishes were present when I acquired this document over 40 years ago. To me, they simply add to the character of this unique piece of history.Take a careful look at all of the pictures. If you would like to have this pass in your collection place a offer.I ship via USPS Priority Mail; and, I pay half the cost.
