Description
Strange Gods is a fine original Limited Edition drypoint etching drawn and printed in 1928 by English born American artist, printmaker, and illustrator Marguerite Kirmse. In the 1920s and 1930s Kirmse produced some of the finest etchings of dogs ever made. They are highly valued by collectors today. In Strange Gods Kirmse placed two Pekinese dogs, a breed that originated in China, in front of a an altar with a statue of the Buddha. It is a sweet scene with the two dogs looking longingly at the statue as if there is something there they recognize. As in all of her dog etchings, the dogs are masterfully drawn.

Artist Biography
Marguerite Kirmse was born in Bournemouth, England on December 14, 1885. She studied both music and art in England, but it was after her emigration to America that she developed her talent for the visual arts. She was a pupil of Frank Calderon, and she specialized in drawing and etching dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes. Her work displays a tremendous emotional understanding of dogs, their expressions and behaviors. While she maintained an artist’s studio in New York City, she also had her breeding kennels in Connecticut (under the kennel name of Tobermory), housing Airedales, Irish Terriers, English Setters, English Pointers, a variety of Spaniels, and of course her adored Scotties. Her husband George W. Cole was president of the Scottish Terrier Club of America. She expertly showed her dogs, participated avidly in field trials, and proficiently shot over them.
