$11700.00

Black on BlackMaria Poveka Martinez (1884-1980) is probably the most famous of all pueblo potters. She and her husband, Julian, discovered in 1918 how to produce the now-famous black-on-black pottery and they spent the remainder of their careers perfecting and producing it for museums and collectors worldwide. Here we are selling our prize piece of art from our collection of 30 years. This piece of the most famous potter ever was purchased by us 25 years ago at a Doctors estate. This pot is \"8 Wide x 6\" tall. It should be in a museum because I have never in all our years of collecting seen one of Maria\'s pots in redware of this quality and with the water serpent. In 1923, Maria began signing Marie on pieces made by her and Julian. His name was omitted because making pottery was “woman\'s work.” Pottery made by Maria and painted by Julian, signed Marie, was most probably made between 1920 and 1925.This piece of art is for the serious collector and it has been such an honor to have had it in our collection. Time to move on to the next collector. Don\'t be afraid to make an offer or call with questions:316-729-8061. Thanks for looking!!!Vince and Cindy
