SIZE : Height (including the base)- 21.75”Finely carved and polished wood sculpture.
Signed by the artist in paint on the bottom and carved into the wood on the reverse:“M. FINKELSTEIN”.
Engraved metal plaque affixed to the back of the painted wood base.
This is a rare early figurative sculpture titled “Lament” or Mother’s Lament”. Max Finkelstein was a Jewish American artist who was born in New York City.
There is a good web site about Max Finkelstein, easily found, and this sculpture is pictured on his page of ‘wood sculptures’. His early figurative works are reminiscent of those of Beniamino Bufano who was also working on the West Coast during this period. Finkelstein later moved into abstraction for which he is well known.
Max Finkelstein (1915 - 2016)Max Finkelstein was born in New York City in 1915. In the middle of the Depression, Finkelstein graduated from Baron De Hirsch Trade School and began working in machine shops. In 1954 he started sculpting which included multimedia modeling, carving, welding and constructions. By then he had moved to Los Angeles and studied at the California School of Art, Los Angeles City College, UCLA, and the Kahn Art Institute. He died in 2016 at the age of 101.
Exhibited: Fresno Art Center, 1964; Santa Barbara Museum, 1968; Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, CA 1995; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA 1970.
Works held: Hirschhorn Museum (Washington, DC); Jewish Museum (New York City); UC Berkeley; Santa Barbara Museum; Honolulu Academy of Art, Honolulu; Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Washington, DC; Frederick R. Weisman Foundation, Los AngelesPROVENANCE : New York City : Excellent undamaged condition. Light wear to the surface of the wood base.
