17-1522 Pte H Millar R IR RIF

With copy Medal Index Card, British War & Victory Medal roll and details from the Silver War Badge roll.

Hugh Millar enlisted 28 August 1915 into the 17th (Reserve) Battalion and served in France from 17 December 1915 with the 8th Battalion.

The 8th Battalion were part of 107th Brigade 36th (Ulster) Division and took part in the 1st July 1916 Somme offensive. In reserve they moved forward from Aveluy Wood and assembled in Thiepval Wood, heavy casualties sustained from German shelling and machine gun fire from Thiepval. Advanced across No Man\'s Land under a tremendous bombardment and fire, hand to hand fighting at Schwaben Redoubt. Relieved the following day.

Hugh Millar was discharged medically unfit 3 May 1918 with VDH = Valvular Disease of the Heart.
