When we see the range of marvelous objects produced by medieval goldsmiths, from brooches and belt clasps to crowns, chalices, reliquaries, and even altar frontals, we appreciate the multitude of skills they had at their fingertips. And when the author traces the various influences that contributed to medieval Europe through the Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic periods, we begin to understand why the production of medieval goldsmiths was so prolific. The ingenuity of the craftsmen was limitless, and they did not hesitate to use pearls, precious enameling, and cameos in abundance. We can imagine how medieval ceremonials must have glowed and glittered with the breathtaking magnificence of these extravagant creations.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Very clean hardcover w/dustjacket. Book looks like it has been read lightly once, perhaps only flipped through a few times. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, seemingly only either very lightly read, or perhaps someone merely flipped through it a few times looking at the pictures. However the front and back end papers (the first and last blank pages in the book) show very mild age tanning. Likewise the edges of the closed pages show very faint age tanning (visible only when the book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges). Otherwise the inside of the book is without blemish. Gray cloth covers are clean and unblemished. Dustjacket is likewise very clean, but does evidence very mild edge and corner shelfwear, principally in the form of a little rubbing to the spine head. Satisfaction unconditionally guaranteed. REVIEW: Gold and precious metals have been worked by humans in all cultures where the metals were available, either indigenously or imported, and the history of these activities is extensive. Superbly made objects from the ancient cultures of Europe, Africa, India, Asia, South America, Mesoamerica, and North America grace museums and collections around the world. A goldsmith is a metalworker who specializes in working with precious metals, usually, to make jewelry, valuable flatware, platters, goblets, decorative and serviceable utensils, as well as ceremonial or religious items. Goldsmiths must be skilled in forming metal through filing, soldering, forging, casting, and polishing metal. Traditionally, these skills were passed along through apprenticeships.

In medieval Europe goldsmiths were organized in guilds and were usually one of the most important and wealthy of the guilds in a city. The guild kept records of members and the marks they used on their products. These records are very useful to historians, where they survive. Goldsmiths often acted as bankers, since they dealt in gold and had sufficient security for the safe storage of valuable items. In the Middle Ages, goldsmithing normally included silversmithing as well, but the brass workers and workers in other base metals were normally in a separate guild since the trades were not allowed to overlap. Usually jewelers were goldsmiths.

The printmaking technique of engraving developed among goldsmiths in Germany around 1430, who had long used the technique on their metal pieces. The notable engravers of the 1400s either were goldsmiths, as was Master E. S., or the sons of goldsmiths, such as Martin Schongauer and Albrecht Dürer.

REVIEW: This is part of the Cameo series of books on art and antiques originally published in 1966 in Italy; and eventually republished in 1969 by Octopus Books of London. Printed on a heavy coated stock, it includes 71 full color plates. Visually spectacular, it is also a very intellectually gratifying and educational read. Principal emphasis is on the work of goldsmiths from Medieval Europe, the Byzantine Empire, and Romanesque and Gothic periods.

REVIEW: This is a wonderful, high quality book produced in the U.K. in English for distribution world wide. The full color plates are simply magnificent, and the images are of the most fabulous examples the medieval goldsmith’s art. A real visual extravaganza. High quality binding and great color prints! It is a wonderful reference for those interested in the history of ancient jewelry, with wonderful pictures even for whose who just want to admire the incredible richness of the art form. Still a wonderful reference despite being produced in 1969. Truly enlightening with rapturous photographs, this was considered a classic and authoritative source when it was first published, and it remains so today.

I always ship books Media Mail in a padded mailer. This book is shipped FOR FREE via USPS INSURED media mail (“book rate”). All domestic shipments and most international shipments will include free USPS Delivery Confirmation (you might be able to update the status of your shipment on-line at the USPS Web Site and free insurance coverage). A small percentage of international shipments may require an additional fee for tracking and/or delivery confirmation.
