Outstanding Example of the mastery of bronze in African Art.

Circa early 1700, 9 1/2 x9 1/2\" , use and age patina.

Less known than the bronzes of Benin, the Tikar bronzes also stand in African art by their finesse.This Superb Tikar Sculpture is symbolic which is unknown to us, it\'s finely crafted and has a nice patina.

The Tikar are a pygmy people found in western Cameroon.

At the height of the Tikar Empire, fifteen kingdoms or clans existed, the Ngambe was the largest. Future kings and the ruling class always came from this clan and all clan were headed by a fon who supervised nobles, military leaders, merchants and town leaders. With superior weapons and fighting on horseback, Tikar soldiers protected the empire, maintained domestic peace and collected taxes. A caste system existed, but the standard of living for the Tikar was above those from other ethnic groups. The Tikar people was known for their sophistication in government, war, and the arts - including a bronze casting process. The Tikar have traditionally performed bronze casting. Some objects typically attributed to Bamun / Bamelike are actually Tikar.Most bronze items from the Tikar region are dark in color. The darker color proves that it contains more copper.

The Tikar people have focused on education for generations. Teachers taught boys vocational skills which included craft-making, woodcarving, mask carving and making bronze sculptures. They developed a process of using hot wax and bronze called \"Lost Wax Method\" to create masks and statues to be used during agricultural and other ceremonies and festivals.

The small country of Cameroon has over 200 tribes alone, and as early as the 1970s, included the ethnic Chinese.
