Meissen 19th or Wallendorf 18th century Rare Farmer Figure w/ Sickle Near Excellent
Description:From a recent estate find I have up in this sale a Meissen or Wallendorf Germany hard paste 8” porcelain figure of a farmer made in the late 18th or early 19th century.Both porcelain factories Meissen used this blue hand painted under the glaze mark. The remains of some red illegible writing is also on the back bottom. The porcelain is very white so I am leaning towards Meissen.The figure is gilded in gold at the base and on his clothes. He is barefoot and is wearing black hat with a copper band, cobalt blue toursers, a brownish black jacket with yellow lining and a wide open neck white shirt. His left hand rests in his pocket while his right hand is holding a brown sickle with a silver blade.He is leaning that hand against a tree trunk. He also has a gray seed sack around his waist.See lines section page 223 figure A for the meissen mark in theBook \"Kovels dictionary of Marks Pottery & Porcelain 1650-1850\" andthe website also see Wallendorfat thePM&M online site.I would consider this to be in near excellent condition for being around 200-250 years old
There is a little roughness on the base a few tiny flea marks which are not easy to see. There is also a tiny chip on the edge of his hat. Other then that I do not see any other man made chips and no cracks crazing or repairs. On the back there are two small firing cracks between the tree and the mans jacket.Thishas been kept in various closed cabinet displays for over 200 years.
A rare figure since there were not many yeoman class figures made.As always good luck and happy offerding.
