Founded in Le Locle, Switzerland in 1846, the Ulysse Nardin Chronometer Co. has made a name for itself in the realm of precision time measurement with outstanding chronometers and observation watches. Ulysse Nardin\'s pursuit of precision earned him numerous distinctions at world exhibitions. At the 1862 London exhibition he was awarded the Prize Medal and, in 1893, the firm was given the honor of representing Switzerland at the Chicago world exhibition.

One of their first large-scale customers was the Russian war ministry in St. Petersburg, and from 1906 the American Naval Observatory also numbered among Ulysse Nardin\'s clients. The factory was awarded 4,300 observatory distinctions for these high-precision timepieces alone. This is a firm with a long and proud history, still thriving today with timepieces costing in the thousands of dollars.

I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s timepiece, a mid 1940s (ca 1946) sculpted lug model made specifically for the American market that’s in excellent condition. This chronometer model is 14kt Solid Yellow Gold and is powered by its original high-grade 17 jewel Ulysse Nardin mechanism that is also adjusted for temperature.

Triple-signed, it measures 39mm lug tip to lug tip and 30mm in width (32mm with winding crown).  This works out to be just over 1-1/2 inches long by 1-3/16 inches in width, not including the crown. This works out to be a smaller size men’s watch by today’s standards, albeit normal for the time period. My watchmaker David has fully serviced its original mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.

The silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, the original that’s been professionally restored. It features a 60 second outer track border (calibrated to 1/5 of a second), applied yellow gold hour markers and enamel markers, original gold Baton-style hands and ‘sweep’ original seconds hand. Signed ULYSSE NARDIN CHRONOMETER below the 12. It was never signed Swiss as this watch was cased and timed by Ulysse Nardin at its New York headquarters.

The acrylic crystal is in excellent order. The two-piece case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent shape, complete with sculpted, curved lugs. The gold finished winding crown is excellent as well, operating smoothly.

Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is 14kt solid yellow gold and pristine, no wear or engravings. Inside I find a clean and high grade mechanism stamped Ulysse Nardin Watch & Chronometer Co. of America, 17 Seventeen Jewels, Adjusted Temperature, NOA, SWISS with serial number #527,100, dating it to ca 1946. I am confident with this date as I once had a Ulysse Nardin with a serial number in the 524,000 range that had all its original paperwork and was dated to April, 1946.

The inside of the case lid is clearly stamped with the firm’s official logo and signed ULYSSE NARDIN – NEW YORK – 14K GOLD, L&K - 8982. The case maker initials L&K stand for Lutringer & Kammerer.

This watch has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. It is fitted on a new 17mm black crocodile (grain) calf leather strap handcrafted by Fluco, Germany. All in all an excellent, ready to wear investment-grade timepiece. Thanks for taking a look!

  • Watch sizes: I provide exact case measurements in millimeters (the watch industry standard) and inches, and include a U.S. quarter in one photo as a size reference. Draw the measurements on a piece of paper to help visualize the watch on your wrist. Remember, men’s vintage watches are noticeably smaller than oversized timepieces you see today. Prefer a brown strap instead of black? For most men’s watches I can switch the color before mailing; just let me know.
